What it is

Transdermal estradiol patches deliver bioidentical estradiol through the skin at a continuous rate.

How it works

Transdermal delivery bypasses first-pass liver metabolism, which has different pharmacokinetic and risk profiles than oral estrogen. Estradiol acts at estrogen receptors throughout the body to support menopause-related symptoms.

Who your provider may consider it for

Your Orbit Health prescriber may consider transdermal estradiol for adult women experiencing menopausal symptoms (vasomotor symptoms, sleep disruption, mood changes) after reviewing your full history.

What your provider will discuss with you

  • Menopausal status, symptom pattern, and time since menopause
  • Personal and family history of estrogen-sensitive cancers, blood clots, stroke, or cardiovascular disease
  • Whether you have an intact uterus (which affects whether progesterone co-therapy is appropriate)
  • Bone density considerations
  • Current medications and other hormone therapy

Considerations

Published literature on systemic HRT discusses balance of symptom relief against individual risk factors. Your prescriber will review risk profile, monitoring, and duration of therapy.

Regulatory note. FDA-approved branded transdermal estradiol patches exist. Compounded transdermal estradiol prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy is not the branded product. Availability is subject to FDA bulk-substance status.

Federal regulations (FDA compounding regulations) and state medical board rules govern what your Orbit Health prescriber can lawfully prescribe to you. See our full regulatory disclosure for active state and federal regulations affecting availability.
